This week, the Brisbane Lightning hosted Adelaide Rush in Boondall, and the visitors walked away with two wins.
The Results
Adelaide Rush defeated Brisbane Lightning 6-1 in regulation on Saturday afternoon and 4-3 in Overtime on Sunday afternoon.
Something new and blue…
Adelaide showcased their new BLUE away jerseys this weekend, and didn’t they look great! This colour contrasts the home jerseys of all teams, and names and numbers were clear and visible.
How did they do it?
Rush outshot the Lightning 33-11 on Saturday and 40-19 on Sunday.
Adelaide came out strong in game one, holding possession and forcing Brisbane to defend for a large portion of the game. The Rush had control and created several opportunities for themselves at full strength, with goal six being the sole special teams goal of the game.
Sunday contrasted with the afternoon before, with Brisbane having a fresh spark and energy. Securing the first goal short-handed, Courtney Mahoney got her team ahead early. The goal-for-goal between the two teams ended the game 3-3 and took it to overtime. Jordan Kulbida would score the OT-winning goal and her fourth of the weekend.
Every goal in Sunday’s matchup was on special teams, with short-handed and power-play goals scored, ending on the 3v3 overtime team. In games, you’ll often see a couple of these, but to have so many highlights, how both teams need to work on staying out of the box and focusing on 5v5 hockey.
Who stood out?
I am a big fan of goalies and thrilled for the Adelaide Rush goalies of the weekend, Emma Moonen and Rebecca Kempe, who each secured their first AWIHL wins.
Jordan Kulbida created numerous opportunities across the weekend, contributing four goals and two assists to the weekend’s win.
Lindsey Kiliwnik of the Lightning also worked hard across the weekend for the Lightning, with a goal in each game and challenging offensive opportunities to get her team ahead.
