After The Whistle – Week Seven

After The Whistle – Week Seven

Last weekend we had four games happening across the Australian Women’s Ice Hockey League with Sydney hosting Perth and Ice hosting the Rush.

We had excitement all round with the visiting teams sweeping the weekend, and stand out performances from the top lines.

On Saturday Perth Inferno 7 defeated Sydney Sirens 6, also winning 4-3 on Sunday morning. Saturday afternoon Melbourne Ice 3 defeated Adelaide Rush 2 in a valiant comeback effort, and had a smashing 6-1 win on Sunday.

On Saturday, Both the Sirens and Inferno came into the game looking flat, but the scoring made for a thriller. It was a goal-for-goal battle in the first period, with both sides keeping up with each other throughout the second and third to keep the game close. Sasha King faced a whopping 40 shots in net from the Sirens, and Ella Licari saw 24 shots from the Inferno.

Perth Inferno’s top line, led by Scala, Sammons, and Clark-Crumpton, continue to shine week in and week out. I was lucky enough to attend the game on Saturday and see them in action, in person.

Melbourne Ice demonstrated their resilience and offensive depth, delivering a dominant weekend performance. Fightinig to come back on Saturday, Sharna Godfrey, affectionately known as ‘The Apex Predator’ demonstrated how she earnt her nickname with a top shelf goal to seal the win.

Sundays game was close between Ice and Rush right through to the second when the Ice found the momentum they needed and took the lead, running away with the game.

Adelaide Rush, while facing tough losses, showed heart and determination, highlighted by Moonen’s standout efforts in net. Claudia Tom had 30mins in net for the Rush, saving 20 shots in her period and a half in the game.

To their credit, the Rush never let up, continuing to battle until the final whistle. But the Ice’s firepower proved too much to handle, and the home team skated to a decisive 6-1 victory.

It was another weekend of exciting hockey as the teams head towards the Christmas break. The next games will be on the 4th and 5th January where Lightning will host the Ice and Rush will host the Sirens.

Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
