After the Whistle – Northstars and Rhinos Face Off in Exhibition Series

Game One: A Goal-Filled Spectacle in Newcastle

On March 22, 2025, the Newcastle Northstars welcomed the Rhinos to Hunter Ice Skating Stadium for the first of two exhibition matchups. In front of a packed crowd, the Northstars delivered an attacking masterclass, securing an 8-6 victory to kick off the series.

The offensive firepower was on full display, with both teams trading goals throughout the game. Patrick Nadin bookended the scoring for Newcastle, netting the first and final goals of the night, while Wehebe Darge stole the show with a hat trick, scoring twice in the opening period and completing his three-goal performance in the third.

Period two saw Liam Manwarring and Tim Stanger contribute to the tally, with Stanger’s goal leveling the score heading into the second intermission. Rookie Maliq West added his name to the scoresheet in the final frame, scoring a crucial go-ahead goal before Nadin’s second sealed the win for the Northstars.

Game Two: Tight Battle in Erina Ends in Rhinos Victory

A week later, on March 29, 2025, the teams met again, this time at Erina Ice Arena for the second exhibition match. The atmosphere was electric as fans from both sides gathered to witness the final preseason showdown before the AIHL regular season kicked off.

Despite their strong showing in game one, the Northstars fell short in a hard-fought contest, with the Rhinos taking a 2-1 victory. Newcastle’s sole goal came in period two, courtesy of Casey Kubara, who continues to be a key figure for the team.

Looking Ahead: Season Opener in Perth

With the exhibition series wrapped up, Newcastle now shifts focus to their opening weekend of the AIHL regular season. The Northstars will travel to Perth for a double-header against the Thunder on April 5th and 6th, kicking off what promises to be a thrilling season.
