after the whistle round two

After The Whistle – AWIHL Round Two – 15 & 16 November

The Australian Women’s Ice Hockey League (AWIHL) in round two was nothing short of fun to watch. With four teams, four games across two days, there was plenty of action!

The Results

Saturday

Adelaide Rush defeated Melbourne Ducks 3-2 in overtime

Melbourne Ice defeated Perth Inferno 4-3

Sunday

Adelaide Rush defeated Melbourne Ducks 6-4

Perth Inferno defeated Melbourne Ice 4-2

The travelling teams have been dominant in weeks one and two, which is a point that stands out. The early mornings, flights, and travel can often take their toll on players. In these opening rounds, I feel the skill of the league is on show without the teams feeling the struggle from this travel.

Discipline

Penalties can play a big role in a game; if the special teams step up on either side, it can change the flow. When commentating in Newcastle, I have talked many times with my play-by-play commentator that mistakes can make or break a game for a team, and in the AWIHL season, being so short for teams, every game is so crucial.

The Goal Scorers

Over the last few seasons, I have noticed a few names in particular who play hard within their lines and for their team, so it was no surprise they stood out again this weekend.

In the Ice vs Inferno games, we saw excellent goal-scoring from Clark-Crumpton, Sammons, Scala in Perth, and Cochrane, Julien, and Davis-Tope for the Ice.

What’s Next

Next weekend, the Melbourne Ducks and Adelaide Rush get the weekend off.

The Sydney Sirens will travel West to play Perth Inferno at Cockburn Ice Arena, and Brisbane Lightning will travel South to play Melbourne Ice at O’Brien Ice House.
