awihl round five

After The Whistle – AWIHL Round Five – 6 & 7 December

This was a fun weekend of hockey for me as I was able to attend the first Siren’s home game, watching game two with a group of friends and catch the Lightning vs Ducks games on replay.

Let’s get to it…

The Results…

Saturday:

Adelaide Rush @ Sydney Sirens 7 – 6 in Overtime

Melbourne Ducks @ Brisbane Lightning 2 – 4

Sunday:

Adelaide Rush @ Sydney Sirens 4 – 6

Melbourne Ducks @ Brisbane Lightning 2 – 4

These games were again quite close across the weekend, with the majority tied or separated by one goal for extended periods before a lead was captured and held. It makes for every round to be so exciting, and I am eager for the next one.

Hattricks…

Hattricks are always exciting for the fans and the players, and we saw two sets of hat-tricks this weekend.

The first on Saturday in the Ducks vs Lightning game. Lindsey Kiliwnik opened the scoring for the Lightning with the second goal of the game to tie it up. In the second half of the second period, Kiliwnik would score two more, including a short-handed goal, to help secure the win for the Lightning.

On Sunday, Sarah Edney secured three goals in the Sirens’ game against the Rush with the first goal of the second period. Edney secured her second goal short-handed in the third, completing the hat-trick late in the third on the power play.

Watching Live…

This weekend I had the opportunity to attend the Sirens’ first home game on Saturday, and boy, was it fun!

This past winter, I had the great pleasure of playing defence in front of Rush’s Emma Moonen and alongside Sirens’ Sam Payne, so heading down the coast with a handful of my other teammates from that season to support these women was fun!

There was a decent crowd, and they knew how to get loud. I enjoyed how the grandstand’s metal framing made it easier for us to celebrate the goals and great saves.

On top of that, watching players like Venus, Kulbida, Tihema, Ayris and Multhaner from the Rush along with Edney, Guttormson, McOnie from the Sirens was a thrill to see them live.

While I am grateful for access to the games via live stream, nothing matches the atmosphere of a live game and live crowd.

What’s Next…

Due to Macquarie Ice Rink being unavailable, Round 6 Sirens vs Lightning will not be played, and the points are being split between the two teams. In spite of efforts to find an alternative rink to play, they were unable to.

Adelaide rush will travel to Perth Inferno to play in Cockburn Arena, and Melbourne Ducks will play Melbourne Ice at O’Brien Ice House.
